We all know about St Nicholas (AKA Santa Claus, Father Christmas). The story is that he was a bishop in the 4th century who gave money to the poor. He did it in secret but news got around. The jolly red man's look has evolved over time with various stories about how he came to look the way he does.
The first gifts at Christmas were given to Jesus by the three wise men. The three items were Frankincense, Gold and Myrrh. According to Google Frankincense was a perfume used in Jewish worship and as a gift it showed that people would worship Jesus. Gold was associated with Kings and Jesus is the King of Kings. Myrrh was a perfume that was used for embalming and it showed that Jesus would suffer and die. It's not the kind of gift we associate with giving to new born babies is it? It does tell us that the birth of Jesus was no ordinary birth.
Have you thought about the greatest gift of all? The gift of Jesus himself. It is free and perfect without strings attached. It gives us eternal life, hope, joy, peace. You don't have to purchase hundreds of dollars of stuff and receive a "free gift". It's yours if you want it.
If you have not accepted this gift why not accept him this Christmas.
Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift. (2 Corinthians 9:15)
